The Sustainable Development of the Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining in Indonesia project (SD-ASGM) is a five-year initiative focused on the development of an economically profitable, environmentally sound, and socially responsible artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector in four provinces in Indonesia, with funding for this project provided by the Government of Canada. ASGM is an important income-generating activity present in almost all provinces of Indonesia. Small-scale producers in remote areas can get as much as 70% or more of international gold market prices; for people living in rural areas, small-scale gold mining is seen as a way out of poverty.
